Recent News: Off We Go to Serve Jerantut Folks

On 23 March 2014, our mobile mammogram team made their way to Hospital Jerantut to perform a community service by extending mammogram services to the folks in this district.

The mammogram trailer was parked right at the entrance of the hospital and during this four-day event, the programme played host to folks of all races from the surrounding areas. Besides providing mammogram services, the event also showcased MAKNA’s exhibition on cancer awareness. The response was overwhelming; people kept streaming in into the exhibition area unabatedly. Among the different ethnic groups, the local Chinese women topped as the highest mammogram recipients, followed by the Malays and then Indians. Altogether, there were 173 participants who were screened.

Our staff were busy all day long attending to queries on all aspects of cancer and mammograms. To the best of their knowledge and ability, they maintained connection with the crowd, and even answering technical questions in Chinese when the need arose.

With the very hot weather experienced nowadays, the challenge of being outdoors and remaining under the sun for a long spell can be very daunting. However, under the unrelenting heat, spurred by a sense of dedication and duty, our staff delivered accordingly. Indeed, they actually felt privileged to serve such a big and enthusiastic turnout.

Since we began with our mammogram services, sponsoring these mammograms as part of employee benefits has been adopted by certain companies. Some companies have even gone a step further by sponsoring the mammograms for rural folks who cannot afford them. Recent Activity: MAKNA’s Exhibition Offerings

One of MAKNA’s commitments to the public is providing information and education on cancer. To this end, an exhibition team was set up by MAKNA and has been focused on this particular objective for the past many years. The team is staffed by personnel with medical or non-medical background who have their own areas of responsibilities and specific duties to attend to the needs of the guests' and visitors' during exhibitions.

MAKNA’s exhibitions incorporate talks by MAKNA’s trained and medically-certified personnel at times. The topics presented usually focus on cancer in general or specific common cancers. Demonstrations of breast self-examinations (BSE) will be included when they are applicable or requested.

Throughout the years, MAKNA has organised a substantial number of exhibitions either on its own or in partnership with companies, government agencies, associations, universities, colleges, schools, and the list goes on. Just about anywhere, the exhibition team has shown they are able to adapt to their surroundings, and ready to apply themselves to bring out the best in their exhibitions.

Every year, to enhance MAKNA’s exhibition appeal factor, new exhibits have been and will be meticulously sourced from various suppliers. To defray costs of purchasing items, accommodation and travelling expenses and production of education materials, the team has created packages with different set of offerings. Companies can also choose to take up a package and “donate” exhibitions to organisations or communities which they would have the privilege to identify as the beneficiaries of the exhibitions.

Also, in order to offset or reduce the cost in organising exhibitions, our exhibition personnel will also try to raise funds in a variety of ways through these events.

If you are interested to know more about our exhibition programmes or packages, kindly contact En Tarmizi at 03-21629178, ext 163 or email to tarmizi@makna.org.my .

A total of 441 mammogram scans and 610 breast self examinations (BSE) were performed by MAKNA team. The event wasn’t totally free from hitches as it rained heavily in Jengka which caused flash floods, resulting in massive logistics headaches. Although faced with the unexpected circumstance, our team still went about their work like a real trouper, determined to see the programme through and help save lives!
