MixFM radio station (94.5 FM Klang Valley) and MAKNA recently worked on a project
together to raise funds for children with cancer in the Klang Valley who are
currently under MAKNA’s assistance. The campaign was named “Mix Gives Back with
MAKNA” and one of the identified children, young Francis Chang and his struggles
with cancer were featured as the central figure in the campaign.
Francis,
10 years old, was diagnosed with peritoneum tumour, a rare cancer which the
doctors said as the only case in Malaysia so far. Together with his father, Mr
Chang Kok Yong, Francis was met by the radio station’s breakfast show host, Mr.
Rod Monteiro when Francis was about to undergo his 10th chemotherapy
session at a local government hospital.
The
campaign officially ran on the radio station’s Mix Breakfast Show from 29
January till 14 February 2014. A total of RM35,750 was raised by the end of the
campaign, exceeding the targeted amount of RM20,000 by 79%.
Through
a specially set-up page on peoplegiving.org, listeners of the show were able to
donate to the cause and leave messages to motivate Francis and the other kids
to be strong and continue fighting.
On
the Mix Breakfast Show, throughout the campaign duration, seasoned hosts Rod
and Sarimah Ibrahim would talk about the kids and empathised with their
situation. At such a young age, the children are already being confronted with cancer
head on. The campaign momentum picked up almost instantly and before long, Francis’
story began to strike a chord with the station’s listeners and touched their
hearts.
With
creativity, commitment and passion, the morning show’s hosts did a superb job in
maintaining the momentum of the campaign. By incorporating neatly-produced
and catchy messages played on air several times in a day, this further boosted
the appeal of the campaign. Soon enough, the campaign’s kitty was quickly increasing
and it steadily surpassed its initial target within the first week itself.
By 14
February, the amount had peaked at RM35,750 shortly before the campaign was
officially closed.
To
Mix FM, our partner for the campaign, we would like to express our deepest and
heartiest congratulations to you for initiating the campaign, which had been
initially compelled by a strong desire to help Francis and the other kids. You
have truly demonstrated what the power of radio can do in the hands of a
responsible and caring corporate entity like Mix FM. Your good example is truly
inspiring, hopefully it will spur others to do the same for cancer patients
everywhere.
To
peoplegiving.org, thank you for all the help and good work in hosting the
campaign and also ensuring it achieved its goal and objectives.
To
those who have donated to the cause, MAKNA and Mix FM would like take this
opportunity to thank all of you for demonstrating your sheer kindness and
generosity when it greatly mattered!
Thank
you very much!
