World Cancer Day 2014: "Debunk the Myths"

This year’s World Cancer Day (4 February 2014) is themed “Debunk the Myths” and is focused on concerted methods of disseminating information and knowledge of cancer as well correcting perception about the disease.

Myths about the disease tend to debilitate individuals with cancer and undermine the actions they may take to cope with their condition. It also affects and weakens the morale of family members, friends and anyone who are providing support and care, at times to the point of promoting the belief that cancer is a one-way ticket of no return.

The myth that it is not necessary to talk about cancer as it can be a topic that is hard to address is also being debunked. In actuality, an open attitude towards its discussion can bring benefits in ways that are sometimes not expected at all. The other myth is that there is nothing that can be done about one’s cancer is another crippling belief that must simply be overcome.
